When I was asked to tell my story in this months Newsletter I was so honored and excited to share my experiences and struggles hoping they might influence or help others.I have struggled with weight since I was a teenager, all through three of my pregnancies, I would lose weight and then I would gain it all over again. My very last successful weight loss was when I joined Weight Watchers and was exercising 5 days a week. I was down to a size 4 and had kept the weight off for almost two years.
Where my real story begins is in March of 2011. I was on a business trip to Norway when I was asked to participate in one of our teaming activities which included teaming up and going dog sledding. I was sitting in the sled when on the first turn the sled turned on top of me. After returning to the USA I started to have some serious pain and complications.
As a result in November of 2011 I underwent neck surgery for two ruptured dics. I had gained a total of 40 pounds during my neck injury and surgery period. After 4 months of recovery from surgery and on pain medicine, muscle relaxers, depression and anxiety medication, I was given the okay to start working out again. I then joined Momentum in March.
I was ready to change my life style and start over. It wasn’t until I filled out the medical and health history when it really hit me on how horrible I was feeling and how much medicine I was put on. It was time for a huge change! My goal then was to get to a point where I was feeling well enough so that I could get off some of the medication I was taking. The very first thing on my list of goals was to meet with a personal trainer. So three days later I meet with Carol, whom to my surprise had worked at the Physical Therapy place that I had gone to before my surgery. She was so educated about my injury and surgery that I put my full trust in her. She started me off slow with just some time on the treadmill, elliptical and stationary bike. I remember the first time I was on the elliptical she set me up for a time of 2 minutes and man was harder than I thought it would be. After a couple weeks I was up to 30 minutes on the elliptical. During that time I also set up an appointment with Courtney about Nutrition. It turned out less complex than I thought it would be. She talked to me about the nutrients my body needed and how she was going to help me get on track. I was then introduced to the program, “ My Fitness Pal.”
In May of 2012, I was released from the DR to start doing some more exercising. This is when I started to meet with Carol for Pilates Reformer training which I learned was a good way for me to step up my workout but not put any strain on my neck. I did that for a couple months and then started to incorporate RPM with Amy and Becky. I was scared to death to try RPM, but I quickly became addicted to it and was doing a class 4 days a week, while still doing the elliptical and treadmill. I used to be on the elliptical upstairs and watch all the group classes downstairs like BodyPump, Combat and Step and thought to myself, I’m good right where I am, but little did I know, I wasn’t. I started visits to Jenny Craig hoping it would speed up the process of losing more weight. When I came to the point of losing 20 pound and being off of all but one of my medicines, I hit a stand still.
Everything I tried to help me lose more weight failed. I felt as if I hit the plateau of how much weight my body could handle losing. That's when Clair made a suggestion to make another appointment with Courtney. I figured it couldn’t hurt anything and to my surprise it was a closer step to my goal. She helped guide me to a better way of eating, not that I wasn’t eating healthy I found out I just wasn’t eating enough. Go figure!!! I started meeting with Courtney once a week. She would go into my Fitness Pal account and view everything I logged in. I would also have a weigh in. Courtney also suggested I start mixing some other classes in with RPM because there was no way I was giving that up. So under Courtney’s command,Becky drug me into a BodyStep class one Saturday morning, I thought I was going to die. I did not and now a regular attender of BodyStep, BodyPump, and believe it or not the one thing I NEVER thought I would do, BodyComabt.
This was what I needed, I have dropped another 13 pounds for a total of 33 pounds! I’m not far from my goal now but I am looking forward to reaching it. I believe that it was the passion and dedication of Courtney and all the instructors that at Momentum that kept me coming back. They push me everyday to do more and to push myself with everything I got. To everyone in Momentum, I thank you from the bottom of my heart. Without you I would have never become a more athletic, healthy and happier person. A BIG Thank you to Carol, Courtney, Becky, Amy D., Christine, Ami, Sherry, Clair and Lynette I could have NEVER done it without you guys!!!!
